Mustang Region

Mustang Region formerly the Kingdom of Lo is a remote and isolated region of the Nepalese Himalayas. To the east lies the Marsyangdi River and to the west lies the world’s deepest gorge, carved out by the wild waters of the Kaligandaki. This relative isolation of the region has preserved Tibetan culture from the outside world. Untouched by modern civilization, isolated in its rugged mountain terrain, a way of life persists here. Mustang is the land of Barley field’s pastures for grazing herds. Since it is a restricted area, a non-Nepalese citizen requires certain formalities from the government of Nepal in obtaining a special permit.

Mustang is rich in Buddhist culture, similar to the area of the Tibet Autonomous Region. If you’re more familiar with the lush green hills and terraced rice fields of other parts of Nepal, then Lower Mustang will be quite a surprise, the land is very dry. Mustang is geographically and geologically similar to Tibet. Also, upper Mustang falls in the rain shadow region of Nepal. Hence, trekkers can visit upper Mustang in the rainy season. The most impressive part of Mustang is the conical structures, and the meditation caves carved into the rocky sandstone cliffs.
