Gosainkunda the alpine freshwater oligotrophic lake, which is commonly known as the frozen lake, is located at an altitude of 4,380m in the Rasuwa District. Gosainkunda trek is one of the spectacular and breathtaking scenic beauty treks. It is a popular trekker’s destination due to its mesmerizing natural attractiveness along with kind and friendly civilization of Tamang, and Sherpa. When it comes to beautiful mountain lakes, you will see it surrounded by snow-capped mountains, which make Gosainkunda as beautiful as a clear blue sky, but in winter when the weather drops the lakes freezes.

Apart from Gosainkunda, there are many other lakes such as Nagkunda, Saraswatikunda, Bhairabkunda, and Surajkunda. The trek offers perfectly placed terraced slopes, evergreen forest along with a diverse range of flora and fauna. Furthermore, the path leads you to alpine yak pasture of Kyanjin Gompa from where the mountain panorama is spectacular. In addition, one can get a chance to experience the spiritual lifestyle of the most dedicated Buddhist monk. One can see the dramatic views of the west Himal Chuli (7893meter) Manaslu (8156meter), Ganesh Himal (7406m), Lirung Mountain along with U-shaped glacier valley.

The religious significance of Gosainkunda

Gosainkunda, a mythological lake, is a famous holy lake for Hindu devotees. It is one of the most sacred religious sites for Hindus. Which is visiting during the Janai Purnima festival by thousands of Pilgrims from Nepal and also from India. The Lake is believed to be created by Lord Shiva when he thrust his Trishula (trident) into a mountain to extract water so that he could cool his stinging throat after he had swallowed poison. It is believed that once you bathe in this holy lake all your sins will be washed off.  And the interesting thing is this water in the lake is always warm/hot even in cold season. The views of rising sun over the shining lake will surely make you stunned. Trekkers visit this place because of the beauty and adventure it serves.

Best time for Gosainkunda Trek

Due to its alpine nature, the weather in Gosaikunda is quite unpredictable and changing shortly. However, the best time for trekking is at end of February to the beginning of June when the rhododendrons, the national flower of Nepal, are in bloom. And at beginning of September to end of December or post-monsoon when the weather is temperate and the skies are clear. Trekking in July and August is also possible but the visibility is blurring due to rainfall in this season.

Itinerary


Day 1 Arrival Kathmandu airport (1,300m), transfer to hotel.

Day 2 Drive to Dhunche (1,960m): 6/7 hours drive.

Day 3 Trek to Sing Gompa (3,335m): 4/5 hours trek.

Day 4 Trek to Gosainkunda (4,380m): 5/6 hours trek.

Day 5 Trek to Ghopte (3,530m): 7/8 hours trek.

Day 6 Trek to Kutumsang (2,470m): 5/6 hours trek.

Day 7 Trek to Chisapani (2,215m): 4/5 hours trek.

Day 8 Trek to Sundarijal and drive to Kathmandu: 4 hrs trek, 40 minute drive.

Day 9 Departure transfer to airport.
