Lower Dolpo is a hidden treasure valley and a remote trekking destination in Nepal. This trekking is meant for the real adventures wishing for an off the beaten path experience. The main attraction of lower Dolpo trekking is Shey- Phoksundo Lake beautiful turquoise blue water (Second World deepest “Y” shape lake with no aquatic life ). The trek follows remote and rugged protected area, with admiring the beautiful rain shadow landscape of the Himalayas. In addition, reflected in the colorful barren slopes of the mountains where the play of light and shadow is a perpetual fascinating spectacle. Along with enthralling culture and traditions, the people of this area are simple and warm-hearted.

You will have great chance to experience snowy peaks, ancient and isolated villages, high passes, beautiful lakes. Also, ancient Buddhist monastery, along with the vast array of natural vegetation and rich wildlife. Highlights of Lower Dolpo Trekking

Lower Dolpo trekking is exceptional trek which lies in the isolated region of western Nepal as a rain shadow area. In addition, it is is hard to match its perfect splendor and strong fascination; where one has the opportunity to get together with the nomadic natives and their way of life.  Furthermore, this remote region in western Nepal was opened for the foreigners only in 1990, and now you need to have special permits for trekking in this region. The trek passes through Shey-Phoksundo National Park with spectacular mountain scenery and yak caravans. Lower Dolpo trek route goes through the ancient Tibetan salt caravan trail. The trek crosses over three high passes, Numa La (5,159m), Kangmara La (5,115m),  and Baga La at (5,190m). Due to its nearness to the Tibetan border, Tthe people of Dolpo follow ancient Tibetan Buddhism known as the ‘Bon Po’.

Best time to travel

The best months for this trek are Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to October). Dolpo region lies in the rain shadow area formed by Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges. Hence, You can also take this trip during the Monsoon season (June to August).

Itinerary


Day 1 Arrival in Kathmandu (1300m/4264ft).

Day 2 Kathmandu: Sightseeing and Trek Preparation.

Day 3 Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj: 1 hour.

Day 4 Fly from Nepalgunj to Jhupal (Dolpo) (2,320m/7,610ft) and trek to Dunai (2,850m/9,348ft): 45 mins flight, 2-3 hours trek.

Day 5 Dunai to Tarakot (2,543m/8,341ft): 5-6 hours.

Day 6 Tarakot to Laini (3,160 m/10,365 ft): 6-7 hours.

Day 7 Laini to Nawarpani (3,545m/11,627 ft): 5-6 hours.

Day 8 Nawarpani to Do Tarap (4,090m/13,415ft): 7-8 hours.

Day 9 Rest Day at Do Tarap for acclimatization.

Day 10 Trek to Numa La Base Camp (4440m/14,563 ft): 6-7 hours walk.

Day 11 Cross Numa La pass (5,190m/17,023ft), camp at Pelung Tang (4465m/14,645 ft): 6-7 hours.

Day 12 Cross Baga La pass (5,070m/16,630ft), trek to Dajok Tang (4,080m/13,382ft): 6 hours.

Day 13 Dajok Tang to Ringmo (3,600m/11,808ft): 3-4 hours.

Day 14 Hike to Phoksundo Lake.

Day 15 Phoksundo Lake to Shyanta (2520m/8265 ft): 5-6 hours walk.

Day 16 Shyanta to Jhupal.

Day 17 Fly to Nepalgunj, fly to Kathmandu.

Day 18 Final departure.
